The ISG is delighted to announce a research collaboration between The UK Cards Association and the Information Security Group Smart Card Centre (SCC) at Royal Holloway, University of London. The UK Cards Association has become a Member of the SCC and committed significant funding to the core research programme for, at least, the next three years. The collaboration is by no means just about funding as The UK Cards Association is the UK’s card payments industry voice on a wide range of topics and it has a plethora of expertise and influence. The work aims to provide the opportunity for interested parties to be forewarned and better informed of practical attack scenarios that may affect card payment systems.
The ISG/ Smart Card Centre at Royal Holloway University of London will host the 6th Workshop in Information Security Theory and Practices (WISTP 2012) in June 2012.
The ISG/ Smart Card Centre (SCC) is proud to be selected as the host of the 6th Workshop in Information Security Theory and Practices (WISTP 2012). The event will be held in June 19-22 in Royal Holloway. The ISG Smart Card Centre (SCC) played a pivotal role (along with colleagues from France, Belgium and Greece) in bringing this workshop into existence. The workshop’s steering committee has managed to make this event successful, recognised and equally important an event that bridges theory and practice in the field of Information Security. It is a testimony to this success that every year the conference presents a strong academic programme, the publisher for the conference proceedings is Springer and the event’s programme committee along with the invited speakers are drawn from international experts in the field. Announcing a major research collaboration between Orange Labs UK (Orange) and the Smart Card Centre (SCC) at Royal Holloway University of London
We are delighted to announce a research collaboration between Orange Labs UK (Orange) and the Information Security Group Smart Card Centre (SCC) at Royal Holloway University of London. Orange has become a Member of the SCC and committed significant funding to the core research programme for at least the next three years. Orange will also be the main sponsor of the SCC Open Day exhibition on the 6th September 2011. The collaboration is by no means just about funding as Orange Labs has a wealth of expertise and influence, and is already providing expert lecturers for the SCC MSc module as well as suggesting MSc projects and offering student internships. A sponsored PhD post will be offered in 2011, jointly supported by the SCC and Orange.

The Centre is planning the seventh departmental open day to build on the success and popularity of previous events. This is a free exhibition (50:50 mix of industry and student exhibits) for sponsors, supporters, lecturers, students and visitors -- and also acts as a friendly and informal networking event. ISG Smart Card Centre attracts industry funding to develop innovative security measures
Dr Keith Mayes, Director of the Smart Card Centre, at Royal Holloway, University of London, has been awarded £50,000 by the PARK commercialisation fund to lead the development of an RFID/smartcard attack detector product prototype, with Dr Gerhard Hancke as the lead developer.Read More

Dr. Keith Mayes, director of Information Security Group's Smart Card
Centre, has been awarded a prestigious IET
Fellowship. The Institute of Engineering and
Technology (IET) awards fellowships to researchers
and industrialist who demonstrate successful
leadership and outstanding services in the field of
engineering and technology before a panel of IET

The SCC/ISG is selected to conduct the counter expertise
analysis of the Dutch OV-Chipkaart system.
The SCC/ISG is selected to conduct the
counter expertise analysis of the Dutch OV-Chipkaart system
on behalf of the Dutch government. It is in response to some
recently published attacks on Mifare Classic smart cards(on
which some OV-Chipkaarts are currently based).

Visitor to Taiwan
Dr Keith Mayes (the Smart Card Centre Director) has been invited to Taiwan by the Taiwan Information Security Centre (TWISC). He will be giving guest lectures on Smart Cards/RFIDs and security attacks, during the August summer school.
Visitors From Taiwan
Two experienced researchers from Taiwan, Lien YuanHung and Sung Shun,
arrived as visiting scholars in Smart Card Centre in July 2007. They are
conducting cooperative research with the Smart Card Centre on the security of
RFID systems.
William Sirret, Receives his PhD
Following some excellent work in the Smart Card Centre, William Sirret was deservedly awarded his PhD in September 2007. He is now working for KPMG in Hong Kong, helping to expand their IT Security activities.

New Showcase Lab
The Smart Card Centre has been given an additional office to showcase smart card technology and the department's work.
2 new PhDs for 2003
Two new PhD research students have joined, to study smart card technology full time, for
the Smart Card Centre.
New Teaching Facility Opens
The Smart Card Centre now has a new teaching facility on RHUL campus, with the
capacity to provide 20 people the space and technology to explore the world of
Smart Cards.
